Copenhagen from 1912 until his death in 1975. He became the artistic
director at RC in 1949.<br />
<br />
Here we have a highly collectible <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/88201198/nils-thorsson-vase-figurine-mid-century" target="_blank">Nils Thorsson bird-shaped posy vase</a>
from the "Columbine" series. This black, white and yellow piece was
made in 1960:<br />

I've been MIA for a month, but now I'm back and I've got a lot of posts in the works. They're all up here. (Yes, that sentence is supposed to indicate that I'm sitting alone in front of my computer, tapping myself on the side of the head and winking at the screen.) If you liked <a href="http://pillowsophi.blogspot.com/2011/07/dybdahl-denmark-pottery-dish-and-bowl.html">my first Dybdahl post</a>, you're going to love the next one. And if you liked <a href="http://pillowsophi.blogspot.com/2011/05/ode-to-vintage-pottery.html">this post about Denby's "Ode" pattern</a>, I hope you'll enjoy my upcoming post about my favourite Denby pattern, "Studio" (sneak preview: <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/84426008/mod-pitcher-denby-studio-grey-brown">this pitcher</a>).<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">However, I know most of you are probably looking for something to read <b><i>right now</i></b>. And so, my friends, it is my pleasure to introduce you to </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="http://scarletbegoniavintage.blogspot.com/">Scarlet Begonia Vintage</a>. </span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://scarletbegoniavintage.blogspot.com/p/about.html">Jess</a> of Scarlet Begonia Vintage is currently running a "Tricks or Treats" series, which consists of a number of fantastic guest posts. Among other things, guest bloggers teach you how to <a href="http://scarletbegoniavintage.blogspot.com/2011/10/tricks-and-treats-2011-fabric-pumpkin.html">make a fabric pumpkin</a> (I'd use funky vintage fabric!) and <a href="http://scarletbegoniavintage.blogspot.com/2011/10/tricks-and-treats-2011-halloween.html">decorate your house for Halloween on a budget</a>.<br />

I don't quite know what it is about them; I just think they're charming. Maybe it's the mix of beauty and function I find so alluring. They're so versatile... you can use them in the kitchen, you can weigh packages on them, or they can serve as beautiful candle holders, picture frames or metaphorically-charged (or not) art objects.<br />
<br />
Here are a few of my favourites...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I love this retro brown Soehnle scale...but sadly it doesn't work. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sm-bth4z-Ng/Tl_lkNk-tZI/AAAAAAAAEss/gjB_iivyLyQ/s1600/etsy+-+decanter+denby+hunting+alphabet+soehne+scale+131.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sm-bth4z-Ng/Tl_lkNk-tZI/AAAAAAAAEss/gjB_iivyLyQ/s400/etsy+-+decanter+denby+hunting+alphabet+soehne+scale+131.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">This Park Sherman office scale is from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/ModDom">ModDom on Etsy:</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_570xN.258979998.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_570xN.258979998.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
This fabulous old postal scale belongs to <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/stellabystar">stellabystar on Etsy.</a> It still accurately weighs packages of up to 50lbs! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_9jvX9wo9KU/Tl_lrWCkOYI/AAAAAAAAEsw/S88kyShhldg/s1600/DonnasPostalScale.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_9jvX9wo9KU/Tl_lrWCkOYI/AAAAAAAAEsw/S88kyShhldg/s400/DonnasPostalScale.jpg" width="381" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Scale as picture frame; brilliant! This one's from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/SugarCubeVintage">SugarCubeVintage on Etsy:</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://sugarcubevintage.etsy.com/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_570xN.248241658.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here, the Pelouze Portion Controller from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/AllieEtCie">Allie Et Cie on Etsy</a>:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://img1.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.170238505.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://img1.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.170238505.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">And now... <u><b>Scales and Apples!</b></u></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">This Pelouze postal scale is from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/nellsvintagehouse">Nells Vintage House on Etsy</a>:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_570xN.249824990.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_570xN.249824990.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">This charming American Family scale is from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/GlassnMore">GlassnMore on Etsy</a>:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://ny-image3.etsy.com/il_570xN.254539335.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://ny-image3.etsy.com/il_570xN.254539335.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">This fantastic Forschner hanging scale is from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/VintageRetrievers">VintageRetrievers on Etsy</a>:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_570xN.265805493.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_570xN.265805493.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">This amazing set of antique scales is from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/birdie1">Bird In Hand on Etsy</a>:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_570xN.257179309.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_570xN.257179309.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">And, last but not least, I love the look of this Hanson kitchen scale, also from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/birdie1">Bird In Hand on Etsy:</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://ny-image3.etsy.com/il_570xN.267875743.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://ny-image3.etsy.com/il_570xN.267875743.jpg" width="385" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">So, dear readers... which is your favourite?</span></b></div>Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14852607610138036620noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691740192212364547.post-88632998279597957842011-08-19T17:36:00.001-04:002011-08-19T17:40:24.374-04:00These Boots Were Made For Rockin' (Alternate Title: Marie is a Dork)Last Friday I was at my favourite Goodwill looking for half price day bargains when I saw these CRAZY COWBOY BOOTS. At first I passed them by, thinking there was no way I'd be able to get them on my giant (women's size 10.5-11) feet. Besides, I'm a vegetarian and I haven't worn leather in years. But then I looked back at them and realized they actually looked relatively large, and I thought, "Well, vintage leather doesn't require (further) animal suffering and is eco-friendly...". So I went back. Turns out they were a men's 8, and they fit (albeit rather snugly)! Without hesitating, I snatched those puppies up and bought 'em (for a whole $8.99, since - much to my disappointment - they were excluded from the sale).<br />
<br />
The thing is, these boots are so darn AWESOME that I can't even tell if they're nice or not; I'm blinded by their awesomeness. For all I know, they're absolutely hideous.<br />
<br />
(I'm also not sure if I'll be able to get used to the idea of wearing cow skin on my feet, but that's an issue for another time.)<br />
<br />
<u><b>So, dear readers, my questions for you are:</b></u><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
<b>1. Do you like these boots? Please vote in the poll, and feel free to elaborate in a comment!</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
<b>2. If you don't think the boots should <i>never</i> be worn, what do you think they should be worn with?</b><br />
<br />

<i>Next time: The "Vintage Cottage" miniseries ends with a mid century modern chair, an oh-so-retro set of salt and pepper shakers, and a hippo!</i>Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14852607610138036620noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691740192212364547.post-49561628279742886302011-08-11T16:25:00.000-04:002011-08-13T23:12:13.635-04:00Vintage Cottage, Part I: 60's Denby and Three Little Skunks!I spent the first part of August away from the internet, up at the family cottages (a.k.a. Camp)... but that doesn't mean I've been neglecting this blog! While I was up in cottage country, I took lots of pictures of some of the gorgeous vintage items which are enjoyed by my extended family each summer. For the most part, the cottages were furnished and decorated in the 50's, 60's and 70's; what a treasure trove!<br />
<br />
This "Vintage Cottage" miniseries will consist of two or three posts; this one features some lovely pieces by Denby and three adorable skunk figurines.<br />
<br />
First, a Denby accent mug which I believe to be from the 60's:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kkAqtrsZH8w/TkQ3JUnu0cI/AAAAAAAAEq8/Wkih1Dlwdng/s1600/Camp%2BAug%2B2-3%2B2011%2B036%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="60's Denby accent mug" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kkAqtrsZH8w/TkQ3JUnu0cI/AAAAAAAAEq8/Wkih1Dlwdng/s640/Camp%2BAug%2B2-3%2B2011%2B036%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dWNI6M5HYhk/TkQ3asvCjdI/AAAAAAAAErE/uu41fsS8seI/s1600/Camp%2BAug%2B2-3%2B2011%2B033%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Mid century Denby white and tan mug" border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dWNI6M5HYhk/TkQ3asvCjdI/AAAAAAAAErE/uu41fsS8seI/s640/Camp%2BAug%2B2-3%2B2011%2B033%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QSzYkpem_CQ/TkQ3pT3sAYI/AAAAAAAAErM/gihwyT5_HTM/s1600/Camp%2BAug%2B2-3%2B2011%2B051%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Denby mid-century stamp on mug" border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QSzYkpem_CQ/TkQ3pT3sAYI/AAAAAAAAErM/gihwyT5_HTM/s640/Camp%2BAug%2B2-3%2B2011%2B051%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Next, a stunning coffee set in my favourite Denby pattern, "Studio", which was made from 1961 until 1974 (love this pattern? I try to keep <a href="http://pillowsophi.etsy.com/">my Etsy shop</a> stocked with it):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WGfWeLEyxk0/TkQ4bF5xG8I/AAAAAAAAErU/ktE8dPTUDvQ/s1600/More%2BCamp%2BAugust%2B2011%2B194%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Denby Studio coffee set" border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WGfWeLEyxk0/TkQ4bF5xG8I/AAAAAAAAErU/ktE8dPTUDvQ/s640/More%2BCamp%2BAugust%2B2011%2B194%2B-%2Bblog%2Bwatermarked.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br />

And finally, three adorable little skunk figurines (two of which appear to have been beheaded and - thankfully - lovingly repaired). I don't know who made them, but one eBay seller thinks <a href="http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150624446839&clk_rvr_id=254995361006">a very similar skunk</a> might be 1950's California pottery, perhaps by Rio Hondo or Walker. Indeed, the skunks do bear some resemblance to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/littleblackcar/4470953077/in/faves-palebear/">these Rio Hondo skunks</a>. Anyway, here they are:<br />
<br />

<i>Next time: Pyrex, Arcoroc France and more!</i>Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14852607610138036620noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1691740192212364547.post-20496233012767007152011-07-30T15:35:00.000-04:002011-08-13T23:15:57.111-04:00Dybdahl Denmark Pottery - Dish and BowlI recently acquired two fabulous pieces of Dybdahl Danish pottery; I'm very happy to be able to share them with you in today's post!<br />
<br />
Dybdahl began pottery production in 1952 in Allerod, Denmark; it was run by husband-and-wife team Palle Dybdahl (1918-2001) and Margrethe Dybdahl (1916-1999). After Palle made the pieces, Margrethe (who studied at Rostrup-Boyesens Art School and the School of Design in the 30's) decorated them with - among other things - beautiful leaves, flowers, birds and insects. The pottery also produced spectacular unglazed pots in the shape of various animals (including cats, birds and hedgehogs).<br />
<br />
Dybdahl pieces are quite rare, so I'm extremely pleased to have acquired these two lovely items:<br />

These lovely white, pink, green and blue pieces were made in Norway by Elle Keramikk.<br />
<br />
Under the direction of Tor Samuelsen, the Elle studio produced pottery from 1942 until 1967 in Torkildstranda, which is in Drøbak near Oslo. I get the impression that the popularity of Elle pieces - which are already considered collectibles in Norway - will spread before long... and for good reason!<br />

It's been <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/69949471/on-hold-for-giveaway-rectangle-layers">listed for sale</a> in my Etsy shop, but it doesn't really belong there, alone in a sea of vintage pottery, glass, etc.<br />
<br />
This purse is made of repurposed corduroy (formerly a pair of pants) and cotton (formerly a sheet).<br />

As this blog is a sort of ode to vintage style (metaphorically at least), I thought it would be appropriate to write about Ode, a beautiful stoneware pattern which was made by Denby in the 60's and 70's.<br />
<br />
Ode was based on the shapes which Kenneth Clark developed for the original Gourmet line (introduced by Denby in 1957). Ode, designed by the celebrated Glyn Colledge, was decorated with a sgraffito Greek Key pattern and glazed in antique gold (often referred to as "mustard yellow"). The interiors of the cups and bowls were glazed in a bright white.<br />
<br />
My sources don't seem to agree on this pattern's date of introduction. According to the Denby website, it was introduced in the 50's; according to "Denby Pottery 1908-1997", it was introduced in the early 60's. <br />
<br />
This is a truly gorgeous pattern, and the gently curving shapes make these pieces a joy to hold. At the California State Fair, Ode won a Gold Medal for Excellence.<br />
